Description |
Set of crewel hand-worked bed curtains, circa 1770. Floral crewel work on white wool. Headcloth, 3 valances, 4 curtains. Hand sewn crewel embroidered bed hangings made by Rachel Dwight Gould (circa 1768). Rachel was the wife of revolutionary officer Major George Gould of Dedham, who commanded a company of Minute Men that responded to the Lexington Alarm on April 19, 1775. Rachel is the daughter of Samuel Dwight and Jane Buckley and she was born in Dedham on March 15, 1734. Rachel spun the flax, wove the cloth, spun and dyed the yarn (wool) and worked the embroidery. It took Rachel 9 years to complete the set. The hangings were not in the house at the time of the Revolution, but they are typical of the period. |
