Description |
American flag circa 1876 with 38 stars. Machine sewn U.S. Wool bunting with hand-sewn cotton stars. Stripes and blue canton machine sewn wool, with a few more contemporary patches. Rope hoist line. The 38-star flag was official from July 4, 1877 (following the admission of Colorado on August 1, 1876) to July 3, 1890 (following the admission of North and South Dakota on November 2, 1889, Montana on November 8, 1889, Washington on November 11, 1889, and Idaho on July 3, 1890). The admission of Colorado in the summer of 1876 (hence the state's nickname of "The Centennial State") prompted the use of 38-star flags almost immediately after admission, despite the 1818 Resolution officially adding the new star on the following Fourth of July. Centennial celebrations all over the country in late 1876 and early 1877 displayed the 38-star flag. Tagged at hoist corner at the top left of the canton. |
