Description |
American flag circa 1890 with 15 stars. Hand sewn American flag with fifteen stars, 7 red stripes, and 6 white stripes. New states were Vermont and Kentucky. This flag is made of USA manufactured wool bunting with cotton stars appliquéd on to each side. The stars are not finished; rather their edges are raw fabric. The 15-star flag became official on May 1, 1795 and lasted until July 3, 1818. Officially, it consisted of 15 stars and 15 stripes. Some flags from this era did have just 13 stripes like this flag along with the 15 stars. Flag makers had no pattern to use, and, consequently, the actual designs we know of from this era varied widely. However, the fabric used in this flag, coupled with the sewing technique used in attaching the stars point to a later date for this flag. The use of American made wool bunting indicates a date no earlier than 1867 and the type of attachment of the stars would indicate a date of between about 1890 and 1900. |
